Moto Guzzi Contingency

New postby Angel » Wed Apr 5, 2006, 12:18 pm

FYI: http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=25408

$100/$50/$25 for all classes. Pretty cool.

What classes would a Guzzi be competetive in? Not that I have the money to go out and buy one.

Hey Clinton, you still have that one you had? Break it out, could be a money maker.

By looking at where the money is being put, ARHMA and WSMC, I am guessing that there are a few individuals who have managed to get their hands on the MGS-01. The odd thing is the dealers supporting the thing, they are spread out all over the country, so again guessing these people might be located here in SoCal and looking to really compete in the Battle of Twins class with ARHMA across the country and a few races with WSMC???

Very few made and not cheap and in the right hands someone could make a decent run at M/W Twins with it. I would love to get my hands on one of these.

isn't ARHMA vintage stuff? They racin' new motorcyles in the vintage now? Doesn't Ed Miltch ride a Guzzi in vintage heavy, or some twins class at Willow?

AHRMA has always had a twins class that allows all twins to run it, never had a vintage or year set on that class so it is pretty much a Ducati cup class. From the AHRMA rule book:

http://www.ahrma.org/rulebook/sec10.htm

10.9 BATTLE OF TWINS®
10.9.1 Machine eligibility: All competition classes are intended for two-cylinder motorcycles only. All classes may be run together and scored separately as determined by the number of entries and track conditions. Classes include (see rule 10.11 for additional mechanical requirements):
a) Formula 3: Pushrod OHV machines to 1000cc, OHC 2- or 3-valve to 800cc, OHC liquid-cooled 4-valve to 650cc. Suzuki SV650, Buell XB9R and Kawasaki 650R limited to Supersport specifications (see 10.11.1); otherwise must compete in F-2.
b) Formula 2: Pushrod OHV machines to 1250cc, liquid-cooled OHC to 750cc, air-cooled 2-valve OHC to 1000cc and air-cooled 4-valve to 1000cc. Ducati 748 and 749 4-valve water-cooled must race in F-1.
c) Formula 1: No displacement limits. Engine modifications are unlimited, with the following exception: water-cooled 4-valve twins over 900cc are limited to Supersport specifications (see 10.11.1) and intended to be U.S. road legal production models only.
d) OPEN Two-Stroke: Air-cooled two-stroke motorcycles to 500cc; water-cooled two-strokes with tubular frame to 400cc; and modern 250cc GP type machines.

I still think this could be open to a lot more riders than you think. If "All Classes" means "All Clases". there are still a few Guzzi's out there that I know of, and they ain't new.

I agree. I have seen a few show up there at WSMC to run the vintage stuff. I remember a few years back one running in Hvy Wt. Novice and beating my friend all weekend in practice on his 748 and we gave him hell for it. Come Sunday for the HvyWt. Novice race that was the only bike he was able to beat was a guy on an old Guzzi. I always loved those Guzzi's.

But Guzzi has been pushing that MSG-01 bike to club racers. I know they have made a limited run of them and were expensive, nearly 30k and I think racer pricing was something around 25k. I was looking at both that and the 749R and just decided to wait a few years until some race prep'd 749R's start hitting the market for 15k or so. They seemed to really advertise the club racer pricing but offered nothing else, maybe this is their attempt to step up pushing the bike and offering money in any class with the two orgs. Hell, if they don't restrict to bike model or year it was built, time to go look at some older ones down at GP in San Diego and run vintage with it!

Ed Milich does have a Guzzi racer and he runs AHRMA i think or is it AFM... My sponsor Sport Cycle Pacific ran 15th or something in an AMA race on a 1000 Guzzi at Laguna a few years back. Dave put Bryan Kovarick on it at WSMC and the tranny blew up. Don't know if Dave ever rebuilt it. Ed's around, and he knows a lot about them.

Ed also won Daytona Vintage middle weight this year. It was great fun in '04 when Ed, Berry King, and myself had great races in vintage lights.

Guys- I wish I had enough $$ to pay anyone who is crazy enough to run a Guzzi with WSMC...I have to stick to paying the guys who can place. This program is mainly designed around AHRMA, and is an effort to help out guys who race Guzzis. I included WSMC because it's my local club and I want to support it....although I'm the only person out there on a Guzzi (and I've recused myself from the program). If anyone has the cojones to run a vintage or modern Guzzi at screaming fast Willow, I want to recognize them with some green! Here's your chance.

Winning Middleweight Superbike at Daytona was great. Thad W. won Heavyweight Superbike, so WSMC was well represented at Daytona in 06.

See you guys in April for WSMC. Warren and Clinton, please slow down. :-)

Those are kind words from some one who is in front of me, more than I'm in front of them.
